What timber do you use?we have a choice of four timbers, listed below
PINE: H3 treated NZ PineNew Zealand pine is a remarkably versatile timber renowned for exceptional machining properties, durability, lightness, and structural strength. The strength of NZ pine compares favourably with most traditional construction lumber
MACROCARPA:Is a softwood, honey brown in colour with a natural luster, has a natural resistance and therefore does not need any artificial protection against insect or fungal attack, is recommended both for its structural strength and decorative appeal, has low shrinkage factor from green sawn to dry, a beautifully scented timber, and needs no artificial treatment
LAWSON CYPRESS:Lawson Cypress is famous the world over for its durability and stability. Native to western America and sometimes known as Oregon Cedar, in NZ it is named Lawson instead, after a famous Edinborough nurseryman. Lawson Cypress is a good all round softwood timber. The heart wood is very durable, it is especially strong and it is very stable, generally better than Macrocarpa all round. It is of a light colour, with contrasting dark knots, sometimes giving it a baltic pine look. It also has a natural spicy smell which some people find attractive. Traditionally used for boat building, framing, weatherboards, shingles, panelling and furniture
BLACKWOOD:The highly decorative hardwood of blackwood outshines almost every other timber in the range of colours which it possesses. It is classed with an elite group of woods for fine furniture. Blackwood heartwood is a rich golden brown through which there may be streaks of reddish brown or almost black. Grain is usually straight but sometimes wavy, producing a fiddleback figure. Blackwood takes all kinds of stains and paints although its attractive figure begs the use of a clear finish
